Life-giving coffee
The latest in a long line of research papers into the health benefits and pitfalls of coffee consumption has been published in the European Journal of Epidemiology. And it’s good news for coffee houses! According to the research, drinking two cups a day can increase life expectancy by up to two years. In analysing 40 studies with a total of 3,852,651 subjects and 450,256 causes of death, researchers found that drinking coffee had an inverse association all-cause mortality – “irrespective of age, overweight status, alcohol drinking, smoking status, and caffeine content of coffee”.
In addition to increased life expectancy, drinking coffee was also found to reduce the risk of developing and dying from cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes or respiratory disease. As with previous reporting on the health benefits of a single source of food or drink, moderation in all things is key.
